Washington Bus App — UX/UI Case Study

Mobile app concept improving public transit experience through real-time tracking and user-friendly design.

Overview
The Washington Bus App was designed to improve the public transportation experience for students and office workers by providing real-time bus arrival information and route selection.
The goal was to reduce daily stress caused by unpredictable delays and overcrowded routes, helping users plan their travel more efficiently.

Problem
Users often faced uncertainty while waiting for buses, with little to no reliable information about arrival times or route changes. This resulted in frustration, time loss, and poor commuting experiences.

Solution
I designed a simple, intuitive mobile app that provides accurate, real-time bus updates and allows users to mark favorite routes for quick access.
Through clean visual hierarchy, accessible colors, and clear navigation, the app ensures a calm and reliable commuting experience.

My Role & Process
As the sole UX/UI designer, I led the full design process — from research to high-fidelity prototype — following the Double Diamond framework:

• Discover: Conducted user interviews, analyzed competitor apps, and identified key frustrations.
• Define: Created user personas, journey maps, and user flows to clarify user needs.
• Develop: Designed wireframes, a visual identity, and a scalable design system.
• Deliver: Built an interactive prototype, conducted usability testing, and refined design details based on user feedback.

Usability Insights
During testing, users found the app easy to navigate but noted that the yellow “favourite” icon was hard to see in bright light.
After adjusting its contrast and refining spacing within the navigation bar, usability and visual clarity significantly improved.

Outcome
The final design delivers a modern, user-centered solution that improves everyday travel efficiency and comfort.
This project deepened my understanding of accessibility, consistency, and the impact of small visual improvements on overall usability.
